How these times are calculated

Candle lighting is 20 minutes before sunset on Friday, the local custom (most communities elsewhere light 18 minutes before). Shabbat ends at nightfall (tzeit hakochavim), when the sun is 8.5° below the horizon and three small stars can be seen. Other communities use a fixed time after sunset:

CustomShabbat ends on Sat, Oct 31
Sun 8.5° below the horizon (three small stars) shown above6:29 pm
50 minutes after sunset6:36 pm
72 minutes after sunset (Rabbeinu Tam)6:58 pm

Sunset is computed for the city centre at sea level, with daylight saving time when it applies. Candle lighting is rounded down to the minute and the end of Shabbat up, so both are on the safe side. We checked these times, Shabbat and holidays, against the main Jewish calendars published online: they agree to the minute, or ours are one minute on the safe side. Calculated times: when in doubt, follow your synagogue or rabbi. Methodology
