How these times are calculated

Candle lighting is 18 minutes before sunset on Friday, the custom of most communities. Shabbat ends at nightfall (tzeit hakochavim), when the sun is 8.5° below the horizon and three small stars can be seen. Other communities use a fixed time after sunset:

CustomShabbat ends on Sat, 31 Oct
Sun 8.5° below the horizon (three small stars) shown above17:27
50 minutes after sunset17:26
72 minutes after sunset (Rabbeinu Tam)17:48

Sunset is computed for the city centre at sea level, with daylight saving time when it applies. Candle lighting is rounded down to the minute and the end of Shabbat up, so both are on the safe side. We checked these times, Shabbat and holidays, against the main Jewish calendars published online: they agree to the minute, or ours are one minute on the safe side. Calculated times: when in doubt, follow your synagogue or rabbi. Methodology

Can I light Shabbat candles earlier?

Why do calendars show slightly different times?

Customs differ (how many minutes before sunset, which nightfall), and each calendar computes sunset for its own point: for London this page uses 51.5085° N, 0.1257° W, at sea level. That can move a time by a minute or two. In London, the United Synagogue publishes its own calendar: Shabbat begins about 15 minutes before sunset and ends when the sun is about 8° below the horizon, so with this page’s default customs its times are a few minutes later on Friday and earlier on Saturday night. If your synagogue follows it, use its times.
